Woyzeck

Drama by Georg Büchner

The simple soldier Franz Woyzeck lives in poor circumstances with his lover Marie and an illegitimate child. He tries to keep his head above water with odd jobs: He shaves the captain's beard and is humiliated in the process, he serves the doctor as a guinea pig for experiments and eats only pea porridge for months on end.
Marie, on the other hand, dreams of a different life and with the advances made to her by the handsome drum major, a way out seems within her grasp.
When Woyzeck finds out about the affair, all he can see is red. Driven by inner voices and raging jealousy, he stabs Marie to death in his madness.

Written by Georg Büchner in 1836, he was never able to complete the fragment due to his early death. The drama about power structures that are difficult to break through and about being at the mercy of social circumstances was not premièred until 1913 in Munich.
