Design forum of the large district town of Radebeul

The design forum supports decisions on significant urban development projects with expert recommendations regarding their urban development, architectural and design quality.

Establishment of the design forum

In September 2021, the Radebeul City Council decided to set up a design forum. It is a further building block in Radebeul's commitment to StadtBauKultur. Following its constitution, the forum held its first regular working session in March 2022.

Tasks and objectives of the design forum

As an independent body of experts, the Design Forum supports the Lord Mayor and the administration and advises private developers on their construction projects. It provides expert recommendations on the design of projects that are significant in terms of urban planning and architecture and that characterise the cityscape, thus helping the city council committees to make decisions. The planned projects are discussed in terms of their urban planning and design quality and their impact on the cityscape and landscape. The aim is to achieve a contemporary and innovative design quality for the building projects.

Members of the design forum

A total of eight people regularly take part in the meetings of the design forum. Five voting members are appointed from the fields of urban planning, landscape planning and architecture, who are independent of the city of Radebeul in terms of their place of residence and work. They are recognised experts in their field and are qualified, for example, through success in competitions and experience with outstanding design and construction work.

Procedure of the committee

The committee meets approximately every three months, with around four meetings scheduled per year. The meetings of the committee are not open to the public. The agenda is drawn up by the office in consultation with the specialist departments involved and confirmed by the First Mayor as the Alderman for Urban Development and Construction. The members entitled to vote familiarise themselves with the sites under discussion during inspection tours. As a rule, a maximum of 45 minutes is available to discuss the individual projects. After an introductory presentation by the architects or developers, questions and clarification of possible issues, the jury discusses the projects. Finally, a member with voting rights summarises the recommendation of the design forum.
