The phantom of the universe
The Phantom of the Universe tells the exciting story of research into dark matter, from the Big Bang to its indirect detection in the 21st century. The film shows the first indications of the existence of dark matter in the 1930s from the perspective of Fritz Zwicky, the scientist who coined the term "dark matter". He takes the audience into the depths of a former gold mine in South Dakota, to the most sensitive dark matter detector in the world. From there, the film moves on to the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator at CERN in Switzerland, where an international team of scientists is working together to track down the components of dark matter. Dark matter has not yet been directly observed, but its existence is no longer questioned in cosmology.
