Indians? Play! - Indigenous games to try out

With the start of the summer holidays, a small games landscape is being created in and around the tipi at the Karl May Museum. A variety of indigenous games of skill, strategy and chance are waiting to be explored by visitors. The games also tell their very own story of the peoples of North America.

Competition, games and learning through play have always been part of human nature. They can be used to test vital skills, strengthen social bonds or simply kill time. It is therefore hardly surprising that the indigenous cultures of North America have developed a diverse culture of games.

The oldest known game in North America is probably Slahal - a game of chance which, according to archaeological finds, is over 10,000 years old - and which visitors to the Karl May Museum can try out for themselves. On the other hand, there are games such as Picaria or Awithlaknannai, whose similarities to games we are familiar with, such as mill and draughts, are hard to overlook. It is highly likely that peoples such as the Pueblo were inspired by European settlers and missionaries.

The games on display are accessible from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 - 18:00 in the Karl May Museum at no extra charge to the normal ticket. Visitors also have the opportunity to try their hand at archery (please see our website for the dates ).
