The young Henri, King of Navarre, is to marry Princess Marguerite de Valois, daughter of the Queen of France. The purpose: to reconcile the two royal houses. What sounds like the end of a fairy tale is actually a bloody turning point in 16th century France, depicted in this novel by Heinrich Mann.
