Help and support for Radebeul's twin town Obukhiv

Call for a joint commemoration of peace

The city of Radebeul stands by the side of its long-standing Ukrainian twin town of Obukhiv and would like to support it with concrete help.

"In the more than 20 years of partnership, close relationships have developed between our cities, personal friendships and even marriages have been formed. Regular school exchanges, visits and extensive contact between the fire brigades of our towns have forged a stable, sustainable bond between Obukhiv and Radebeul. This makes the current political developments in Ukraine all the more upsetting and the desire to help is great," explained Mayor Bert Wendsche and continued:

"The city of Radebeul has set up a donation account and is asking for monetary donations for Obukhiv. Unfortunately, donations in kind cannot be accepted at the moment as we do not yet know exactly what is needed. We are particularly pleased with the support of the city of Meissen, which also wants to collect donations for our twin town of Obukhiv, the offer of support from our twin town of St. Ingbert and numerous companies and private individuals who have contacted us in the meantime and offered their help," says Wendsche.

The city of Radebeul is also trying to organise an aid transport with medical supplies for Obuchiw at short notice. "Above all, bandages, surgical suture material and the like are needed. Here, too, we would be delighted to receive support from companies and the public," said the Lord Mayor. We would also like to keep the people of Radebeul regularly informed about the current situation and support options. To this end, we have set up a special page at radebeul.de/obuchiw".

Furthermore, refugees are also expected to arrive in Radebeul soon. "We will welcome them and take them in. I would ask everyone in Radebeul to let us know if you can help," says Wendsche.

If you would like to help, please get in touch at and let us know:

  • Who can accommodate how many people and under what conditions?
  • Who can offer translation services (Ukrainian/ Russian/ English) and on what terms?
  • Who can provide services in kind (medical equipment) and under what conditions?
  • Who can offer care and support services and under what conditions?
  • Who can offer work and under what conditions?

The city of Radebeul and the city's parishes are calling for a joint commemoration of peace on Ash Wednesday, 2 March 2022 from 7 p.m. (after the prayer for peace at 6 p.m. in the Friedenskirche) in front of the Friedenskirche Kötzschenbroda. "As a city society, we want to set an example for peace and freedom," explained Mayor Wendsche. "I would like to invite everyone in Radebeul to bring a candle and let us pause together to reflect on the suffering of the people in Ukraine and in our twin city of Obukhiv." Pope Francis also called on all believers and non-believers to pray and fast for peace on this day. "May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the madness of war," said Francis.
