Hoflößnitz Winery - the centre of Saxony's wine culture landscape

The idyllic, listed Hoflößnitz is a jewel of the Saxon wine culture landscape and the first and only producer in Saxony that is fully committed to organic cultivation and produces certified organic Saxon wines. Saxony's only viticulture museum with permanent and special exhibitions on regional viticulture is located in the historic buildings and on the neighbouring open space.

The visitor centre "Saxon Wine Route" offers a wealth of information about the entire wine-growing region in one central location.

The Hoflößnitz is the cradle of Saxon viticulture. The Margraves of Meissen owned vineyards in Kötzschenbroda from 1401 at the latest. The centrepiece of the complex is the associated press house, equipped with a large tree press, which was first mentioned in 1563. A residential building for the mine manager was added in the 17th century. The mining and pleasure house, which was intended for representative purposes, was commissioned by Elector Johann Georg I in the middle of the 17th century.

The outwardly simple, two-storey building with a high hipped roof is modelled on older manor houses in the Lößnitz region and in turn set the style for later manor house buildings in the region. The upper floor houses a banqueting hall and the elector's living quarters, which were lavishly painted by court painter Christian Schiebling and centurion Wiebel. The ceiling of the hall features 80 paintings by Albert Eyckhout depicting Brazilian bird species.

A royal Saxon state winery since 1834, it was broken up and auctioned off after the phylloxera catastrophe in 1889. After several changes of ownership and the remodelling of the manor house in the historicist style, the core of the historic complex became the property of the Hoflößnitz Association in 1912, which restored the buildings in line with their listed status in preparation for public use. A local history museum and a youth hostel were established in 1924. In 1949, the estate was transferred to the state-owned "Lößnitz" wine-growing estate. In the summer of 1992, it was transferred back into municipal ownership and wine production was rebuilt on site.
