Hike through the Fiedlergrund
The walk starts at the tram stop on tram line 4 "Zinzendorfstraße" and leads along August-Bebel-Straße to Augustusweg, where you turn right. To the left and right of the path, you will see impressive villas and apartment blocks, some with large parkland below the vineyards. Worth mentioning is the Jägerberg with the villa "Jägerberg" whose origins date back to the 16th century.
The Ermelhaus stands on the nearest plot of land. It was named after its founder, the Dresden citizen Dr Ermel. In his "well-intentioned foundation" of 50,000 thalers established in 1835, he stipulated that a home for mothers in need should only be built if the sum was doubled through interest. In 1885, the mayor of Dresden at the time, Dr Stübel, was able to fulfil the stipulation in his will. The house is still owned by the Dresden-Neustadt Municipal Hospital today.
Before you reach the Fiedlergrund, you will see the Fiedlerhaus (Augustusweg 114) on the right-hand side, a former lung sanatorium which was opened in 1893 at the instigation of the royal physician Dr Carl Ludwig Alfred Fiedler as a "home for lung patients" in need of recuperation. It stands on a site that was laid out as a vineyard in 1658. From around 1823 to 1892, the house was known and popular as the "Walthers Weinberg" inn.
Once you reach the Fiedlergrund, you are surrounded by a relaxing tranquillity. The gently rising terrain takes you past an old syenite quarry. The Fiedlergrund is one of the larger valleys of the Lößnitz with a high water flow. On closer inspection, you can still recognise the old vineyard walls here. The vineyards were not replanted after the great phylloxera catastrophe in 1886 and so you can closely observe the changes taking place in nature. Perhaps you will find more signs along the way that indicate that the vineyards were once cultivated by winegrowers.
At the end of your ascent, turn left onto "Graue Presse Weg", from where you turn left again onto "Am Dammberg". At the end of the path, turn left again and follow the path until you reach a passageway that is closed to vehicle traffic. Here the forest path leads you up a few steps to a wonderful viewpoint.
The viewpoint is located on the Albrechtsberg. From here, you have an unrestricted view of Radebeul, with the Bennoschlösschen at your feet as well as the foothills of the vineyards and the impressive silhouette of Dresden. You return to the valley along the railings and up a few steps. There is a small quarry on the right-hand side of the path. If you look a little further to the right, you will see part of the Hermannsberg. Today, winegrowers from the "Oberlößnitz" winegrowing association grow and cultivate the excellent Radebeul grape juice. Back on Augustusweg, turn right and follow it to the junction with Eduard-Bilz-Straße, where you turn left.
You will notice houses of the same architectural style along the way. These houses are affectionately known as "Zillerhäuser". They were planned and built by the Ziller brothers, local building contractors who significantly characterised the townscape in the 19th century. At the junction of Eduard-Bilz-Straße and Meißner Straße, keep left and you will reach the stops for tram line 4 in the direction of Dresden or Weinböhla.
