Extra audio story: The hobbyhorse movement

At the end of the 1950s, the workforce decided to overfulfil the export plan and donate the 100,000 US dollars earned to the purchase of an urgently needed, second-hand merchant ship.

This initiative, which was emulated in around 1,600 companies throughout the GDR, gave rise to the so-called "hobbyhorse movement", which was used to finance the GDR holiday ship "Völkerfreundschaft" in 1960, among other things.
