Historic village green Altkötzschenbroda
The street through the historic village centre of Kötzschenbroda has been known as Altkötzschenbroda since 1935.
In the 17th century, the village green was still divided - by a municipal abattoir standing across it, which also had baking, pub and inn rights.
The smaller eastern part in front of the Friedenskirche church was known as the market.
And the weekly markets in Kötzschenbroda were actually held here.
The larger, western part has been called Hauptstraße since the mid-19th century.
The layout of the village square is almost typical of a Franconian roadside village with narrow, deep courtyards. Most of the preserved farmhouses and outhouses date from the 19th century.
In addition to the church and vicarage, the most striking buildings include the Oberschänke tavern and the Hotel Goldener Anker with the steel fountain sculpture "Gegen den Strom" by Karl Menzen, erected in 1999.
Since its redesign in 1990, the village green has been a popular promenade with numerous pubs, cafés, galleries and pretty boutiques. Its proximity to the Elbe cycle path, as well as the annual autumn and wine festivals and the Radebeul Christmas market, have made Altkötzschenbroda one of the town's most important tourist attractions.
