Radebeul and Obukhiv have been twin towns since 1999. Since then, a regular exchange of delegations from the city, associations and citizens has been established. Relief supplies are regularly transported to Obukhiv. Our twin town is located around 45 kilometres south-west of the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

Since 2011, the Lößnitzgymnasium in Radebeul has had a partner school in Obukhiv, Ukraine, with which a regular German-Ukrainian student exchange programme takes place.

A trip by Radebeul pupils and a visit by Ukrainian firefighters to their Radebeul colleagues were also planned for this year.

The Russian aggression leaves us stunned and angry. After years of peaceful reconstruction of Obukhiv, the support of the fire brigade, city administration and hospital by the city of Radebeul and the town twinning committee, as well as many personal encounters with our Ukrainian friends, Obukhiv has become a victim of Russian aggression.

On Thursday, the town twinning committee managed to make contact with the town by telephone. According to our Ukrainian friends, the situation is terrible, people are spending the nights in the cellars and food is scarce.

We would like to help our twin town as soon as the circumstances allow.

Dirk Bachmann, Chairman of the Town Twinning Committee
