Culture meets business - the surroundings of Wackerbarth Castle

Competition theme and competition area 2020

Radebeul, characterised by its historic winegrowing tradition, is also an important industrial and commercial location.

and commercial centre. The area surrounding Wackerbarth Castle is also caught between the conflicting priorities of commercial and industrial development. The area south of Wackerbarth, between the railway line and Meißner Straße, is one of the few remaining areas for potential new settlements.

We were looking for viable ideas for the organisation and design of the competition area that formulate high urban, structural and open space planning standards and mediate between the existing conflicting functions. The area was to be strengthened through a functional and design upgrade and suitable uses with the highest possible design quality were to be added. The valuable historical structures were to be emphasised and further developed. The aim was to make the existing areas fit for the future without compromising the identity of Schloss Wackerbarth and the surrounding area.

Award winners

Gregor Honold, student of architecture, TU Dresden

The winning entry "Gewerbe - Park" proposes a fundamental and sensible distribution of uses on the southern and northern competition site. This is designed to be so flexible and open that adjustments could easily be made over the course of a longer realisation period without calling the main features of the plans into question. A well thought-out network of paths interweaves the utilisation areas, which are adapted to the existing structure and dimensions. By continuing the horizontal path axis from the palace garden, the workshops are to be clearly integrated into the palace ensemble in future. A parallel road to Meißner Strasse will create small-scale commercial areas that will gradually shrink towards the residential area. The condensed structure promotes synergies and avoids wasted space. To compensate for this, a large neighbourhood park with a café is to be created at the head of the commercial area and opposite Wackerbarth Castle, inviting people to linger.
