The great actor Bruscon is to perform his latest comedy on the stage of a provincial inn. He is by no means happy with this, after all, as he repeatedly emphasises, he is a former state actor. Bernhard's play about an aged and choleric artist is both a declaration of love and a critique of the theatre. With dark humour and a great deal of profundity, it tells of the desire for recognition, the fear of ageing and the struggle with one's own expectations.
