Malka May
Opera for young people by Christoph Breidler | Libretto by Julia Jordà Stoppelhaar based on the novel of the same name by Mirjam Pressler
World premiere | from 12 years
On the subject of »Malka Mai«, the Landesbühnen Sachsen organised a competition aimed at young composers, which Christoph Breidler won. Based on the gripping novel, the chamber opera centres on the arduous escape of the Jewish doctor Hanna Mai and her child from Poland to Hungary via the Carpathian Mountains in 1943 in order to avoid deportation. For the composer, this story of an escape, which is also about a problematic mother-daughter relationship, is divided into three parts. After Hanna decides with a heavy heart to leave her sick seven-year-old daughter Malka behind with strangers, we see how Malka loses everything, her family, her shelter and - fatally, back in Poland - almost her life. Although Hanna manages to find her child again, it seems too late for Malka.
In their production, Mien Bogaert and Dennis Peschke show how individual life stories are lost in a time of extreme ideological discourse. Large symbols replace faces, hide the face of the other and cause the unthinkable.
Note: Stroboscopic effects are used for this event. Under certain circumstances, epileptic seizures can be triggered by certain flash frequencies!
