"Burnt Books" - Artistic Positions on the 90th Anniversary of the Book Burnings in Germany!

24.05.2023

The opening of the exhibition "Burnt Books" - Artistic Positions on the 90th Anniversary of the Book Burnings in Germany will take place on Thursday, 25 May 2023, at 7.30 pm in the Stadtgalerie Radebeul, Altkötzschenbroda 21.

The welcoming address will be given by Dr Gabriele Lorenz, Head of the Cultural Office. The city gallery owner Alexander Lange will follow with a laudatory speech. The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by music from cellist Christoph Uschner.

"The exhibition is the result of an initiative by Radebeul artist Ju Sobing. In Dresden, on Wettiner Platz, 10 km from the Stadtgalerie, the first book burning during the National Socialist era took place on 8 March 1933. Numerous burnings followed throughout Germany, with the sad climax on 10 May in Berlin.
Artists reflect not only on this event, but also on its aftermath. The destruction of intellectual property was followed by the annihilation of millions of people in the Second World War and of European Jewry in the Holocaust. In the end, it also led to the destruction of Dresden, including Wettiner Platz, and to flight and expulsion." (Alexander Lange, City Gallerist)

The exhibition can be seen from 30 May to 9 July. The Stadtgalerie is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 14.00-18.00 and Sunday from 13.00 - 17.00.
