The greedy king cannot believe his ears when he hears that the miller's daughter, of all people, can spin straw into gold. She herself is unaware of her good fortune and before she knows it, she finds herself locked up in a chamber. She has one night to spin for her life. In vain - if it weren't for the small, whimsical man whose name is so complicated to spell. He performs the miracle, fills the chamber with gold and wants a small allowance in return. What begins as a good deal turns out to be the future princess's undoing. While everyone in the castle wants more and more and doesn't even think about the future, the grumpy wretch - whose name nobody knows - has long since realised what it's really all about. Is the little man after the very thing that cannot be exchanged for gold?
