Radebeul

The village of R. was first mentioned in a document in 1349 as Radebeul. The name, the spelling of which varied greatly over the centuries (e.g. 1366 Radebeil, 1370 Radebul, 1593 Radewel, 1600 Rödebeul, 1614 Redelbar, 1618 Rodewell), probably goes back to a Slavic (e.g. Radebyl) or German (Radbold) proper name. Other interpretations refer, among other things, to beul/Bühl for hill (Rodebeul = the cleared hill), folk etymological explanations, which were taken up in various municipal seals and still in the town coat of arms, to Rad and Beil. There is apparently no relationship between the name and Radeburg or Radeberg, both of which can be traced back to the river Röder...
