25 years of town twinning with Obukhiv

11.09.2024

The town twinning and friendship between the cities of Radebeul and Obukhiv has now existed for 25 years. Since then, far more than a formal agreement has developed; we are connected in many areas by genuine friendship and even marriages.

The partnership with Obukhiv is lived intensively by many citizens, be it through long-standing school exchanges, a partnership between the fire brigades or the volunteer project, in which volunteers go to the twin town every year for a year to work in social institutions. In addition, there is close cooperation between the Zeithain Memorial, the Obukhiv War Veterans Association, the Radebeul Anti-Fascist League, the city councils of Radebeul and Obukhiv as well as the Lößnitzgymnasium and secondary school no. 5 in Obukhiv.

In the course of the war in Ukraine, the citizens of our city and the city administration have provided intensive humanitarian aid in recent years. Shortly after the war began, children from Obukhiv were taken in by Radebeul, and many more refugees followed. Last year, a large-scale Christmas parcel campaign took place and during the summer holidays this year, 15 children were able to enjoy a welcome break in Radebeul. In recent years in particular, the citizens and town of Radebeul have also provided many humanitarian goods for the twin town of Obukhiv. These include a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter fire engine, a turntable ladder vehicle (both second-hand), a tipper lorry with crane, a dental practice, emergency generators, winter sleeping bags, medicines, medical equipment, tablets and PCs for digital lessons, school furniture, power banks, torches and blankets.

The partnership with Obuchiw has a solid foundation and is now more important than ever. Due to the destruction of the power plant near Obuchiw, there is an acute problem with the supply of electricity and heat. This is only available for a few hours a day. As a result, almost every area of life is affected by restrictions, including not being able to cook food for children or refrigerate baby food. With autumn and winter approaching, the problem will become even worse. The city of Obukhiv has therefore sent us a request for help. Large-volume generators are urgently needed to be able to supply daycare centres and schools, among others. With the funds currently still available in the city of Radebeul's donation account, we are unfortunately only able to fulfil the request for help from our twin city to a very limited extent. The city council of Radebeul is therefore asking for your support. If you would like to help, your donation is very welcome:
