In 1868, the mechanic Gustav Schmidt founded a special factory in Dresden for the production of sewing machine boats. After his early death, his heirs sold the company to Julius Scheffler. The latter expanded to Kötzschenbroda. Around 300 modern machine tools and two friction presses were installed in the new factory. The now world-renowned specialist company specialised in the production of shuttles and components for all household, commercial and industrial sewing machine systems on the market and, within a decade, developed into what was at times the largest industrial company in the Lößnitz communities. In 1918, the company merged with a Dresden-based company in the same sector to form "Nähmaschinen-Teile-Aktien-Gesellschaft Dresden". From then on, the abbreviation "Nähmatag" was used as the product brand. In 1935, around 1,000 workers were employed in the Kötzschenbroda factory, which was expanded several times.
