Gerhard Madaus and his brothers Friedemund and Hans founded their pharmaceutical company for "organic pastilles" in Bonn after the First World War. In 1929, the parent company with 250 employees moved to the former Alfa biscuit factory in Radebeul, which had been remodelled according to modern criteria. The plant-based preparations produced there were also in demand internationally. To ensure the consistent quality of the raw materials, Madaus set up a nursery for medicinal plant cultures at Meißner Str. 381 (near Wackerbarth Castle). The company also included the "Biological Institute" at Meißner Str. 191, which was established in 1935. In the mid-1930s, Madaus employed 450 people in Radebeul alone, but this figure was to rise to 700.....
