Chemical factory von Heyden, Meißner Straße 35

While studying chemistry at the Dresden Polytechnic, Friedrich von Heyden met his colleague Hermann Kolbe, who had succeeded in deciphering the chemical structure of salicylic acid in 1859. At the same time, von Heyden discovered the antiseptic properties of the acid and developed a process for producing chemically pure salicylic acid on a larger scale.

However, the factory founded by Heyden in early 1874 soon proved to be too small. He then had a larger factory built in Radebeul, Meissner Str.35. This was the first industrial-scale synthesis of pharmaceuticals in the world. The factory developed into one of the most important chemical companies in Saxony.
