Volunteer dyke runner wanted

02.08.2021

The so-called "summer" dyke is located on the Elbe in Radebeul-Kötzschenbroda. It was built in the past by the residents of the town themselves and was intended to protect agricultural land in particular from frequent minor floods up to a level of 7.40 metres (Dresden gauge). However, the dyke now also protects allotment gardens and residential buildings. After the 2002 floods, this dyke was also repaired in 2010/2011.
Whether out of habit or for the sake of the beautiful view, the dyke has been frequently walked on since its turf reinforcement in 2019, not without consequences for the dyke and thus for flood protection.
For this reason, the large district town of Radebeul is looking for a so-called dyke runner on a voluntary basis (a monthly allowance is paid). The main tasks of the job include recognising and reporting damage to the dyke and informing citizens directly on site about the necessity of the dyke. The volunteer should have a friendly demeanour and be willing to familiarise themselves with the subject of dyke and flood protection.
