Saxony's only organic winery in a medal rush

Hoflößnitz organic wines won no fewer than 11 medals at this year's state wine awards. A total of 12 wineries with 99 wines and sparkling wines took part in this year's awards. The Saxony Winegrowers' Association honoured the achievements of Saxony's winegrowers by presenting the medals at a festive event.

The Hoflößnitz organic wines were particularly successful. The 2019 Souvignier Gris (a fungus-resistant white wine variety newly bred in 1983 from a cross between the Cabernet Sauvignon and Bronner varieties) and the 2019 Cabernet Blanc (a white fungus-resistant grape variety newly bred in 1991) won gold. The jury also awards the Saxon State Honour Prize every year. Our 2019 Traminer was once again honoured with this prestigious award as the best wine in its category.

"Once again, our 2019 Traminer Spätlese fulfils the highest standards, which makes us very proud," says a delighted Jörg Hahn, Managing Director of the Hoflößnitz winery in Radebeul near Dresden. "Despite the sometimes difficult climatic conditions, our 2019 vintages are once again among the best Saxon wines. Thanks to our outstanding winemaking team led by cellar master Felix Hößelbarth, we will continue to maintain the outstanding quality of our wines in the future. Our organic wines will therefore continue to stand up to international comparison," says Jörg Hahn.

Wine has been grown and pressed at Hoflößnitz since 1401. For centuries, the winery was owned by the Electorate of Saxony. Today, the estate is Saxony's first and only certified organic winery with 12 hectares of vineyards. Hoflößnitz has been certified as an organic winery since 1998 and is inspected annually. Fertilisation in organic cultivation is carried out exclusively with organic substances such as compost, manure and humus. In organic viticulture, plant protection must also be used, but exclusively with naturally occurring substances and active ingredients from plants such as fennel oil, horsetail extract and various herbal extracts.
