Joint project "The Lößnitzgrund is calling"

14.11.2019

New event format aims to bring the Lößnitzgrund back to life as a local recreation area

"The Lößnitzgrund has traditionally been a meeting and recreational place for the citizens of Radebeul, but also for the citizens of the neighbouring communities", explains Lord Mayor Bert Wendsche (non-party) and continues: "It is therefore an important aspect for the preservation and shaping of the city's cultural identity."
The town of Radebeul would now like to raise awareness of this tradition again and "awaken the Lößnitzgrund". An attractive cultural and leisure programme centred around Karl May and Eduard Bilz is therefore set to kick off next year and offer Radebeul residents more opportunities for recreation and interesting encounters. True to Goethe "Why wander far away when the good is so close"...this also corresponds to the idea of an environmentally friendly life and effortlessly builds a bridge between a sense of home on the one hand and cosmopolitanism and modernity on the other. The works of Karl May and Eduard Bilz in particular are characterised by this bridge-building, thus anchoring these themes in the town of Radebeul.

"We have christened this cultural project "The Lößnitzgrund is calling". It is intended to promise adventure and experience and is also an invitation to all those who like to follow in Karl May's literary footsteps, especially in the footsteps of the Indians", says Bert Wendsche.

In the inaugural year, the series of events is planned for the period from 12 to 21 June 2020 and
with performances by the Landesbühnen Sachsen with the play "Winnetou I" as well as an extensive educational programme by the Karl May Museum and summer cinema screenings of the Native American-DEFA classic "Apachen". "We would like to thank the town of Radebeul for the opportunity to further discover the Lößnitzgrund as a place of contemplation and recreation together with the people of Radebeul. From the books that Karl May once wrote here, the characters step onto the big stage of the Lößnitzgrund and we are delighted when our Winnetou comes home, so to speak", explained Manuel Schöbel, artistic director of the Landesbühnen Sachsen.

Gojko Mitić takes over patronage

Gojko Mitić has also followed in the footsteps of the Indians countless times as a film and theatre actor in an impressive manner. "He breathed life into the literary characters and fans associate him inseparably with these stories and adventures", explains Dr Christian Wacker from the Karl May Museum Radebeul. "We are therefore particularly pleased that we were able to win Mr Mitić as patron for the series of events."

The period also includes a very special date: the DEFA star's 80th birthday. The city of Radebeul is therefore organising a fan festival, which will enrich the series of events as a big birthday party of a special kind.
