Radebeul does not use herbicides such as glyphosate on public areas

12.04.2019

Glyphosate is an herbicide (weedkiller) and was long regarded as a miracle cure for weed control. Due to its effect on the green components of the plant, it was assumed that it would not have any adverse effects on other organisms. For some years now, however, there have been doubts as to whether glyphosate is really harmless. The main area of application for glyphosate is agriculture. Due to its rapid and long-lasting effect, the herbicide was eventually used almost everywhere. This is one of the reasons why the Plant Protection Act stipulated a few years ago that glyphosate may only be used on public roads and squares under certain conditions. Authorisation must be obtained and the persons involved must provide proof of specialist knowledge.

The municipality of Radebeul has not used herbicides to control weeds for over 20 years. No derogations for the use of glyphosate have been applied for either. The landscaping companies responsible for maintenance have been instructed not to use weedkillers. The reason for the long-standing decision against glyphosate was that no risk should be taken if there is any doubt about the effect of a substance. The costs of removing weeds without chemical agents are of course somewhat higher. However, there have been no serious cost increases. Furthermore, the so-called "English lawn" is not desirable for green spaces in the interests of our environment.

We ask you to continue to use chemical weedkillers (herbicides) carefully and with great restraint. Our nature will thank us all.
