29th Karl May Festival will not take place in its original format in July

28.04.2021

At the beginning of the year, the city of Radebeul had already decided not to hold the Karl May Festival on the traditional date after Ascension Day, but to move it to the summer. The organisers had feared for their event until the very end, but now it is certain: the festival will not take place for the second time. The current trend in infection figures and the statutory Corona Protection Ordinance, which continues to prohibit large events with more than 1000 visitors, make it impossible to realise the event.

In order to avoid the complete cancellation of the festival, it is to be held in a more compact event format: "We have agreed on a smaller event format on the planned weekend of 10/11 July, where we would like to hold three to four venues under the motto "Karl May - Off the Beaten Track". In this way, we will keep the topic of Karl May in the public eye and revitalise the city centre at the same time," says Dr Gabriele Lorenz, Head of the Department of Culture. More information will follow soon.

With around 30,000 visitors every year, the Karl May Festival is an integral part of Radebeul's cultural programme. Western, country and Karl May fans as well as hundreds of riders on their horses flock to Radebeul from all over Germany to spend three days immersing themselves in the world of the great fantasist, experiencing the Wild West and gaining an insight into indigenous culture.
